Innocent Until Caught is one of those Amiga adventures that starts with a premise so ridiculous you can’t help but grin. You play as Jack T. Ladd, a spacefaring thief who’s just realized he owes the galaxy’s most terrifying organization—the tax collectors—a ton of money. And they’ll straight-up erase him if he doesn’t pay up in 28 days. So naturally, he’s stuck on this grimy backwater planet, scrambling to steal whatever isn’t nailed down.

The interface feels familiar if you’ve played other point-and-click adventures, but it’s got some clever tweaks. There’s this little window in the corner that toggles between a mini-map (super handy when you’re lost in some dingy spaceport) and a magnifying glass for spotting tiny, easy-to-miss items. And your inventory? It’s a freeform box where you can just toss stuff wherever—pile it all in a heap if you want. Feels weirdly satisfying.

What really stood out back then were the rendered cutscenes. They’re primitive by today’s standards, but in 1991, seeing those blocky 3D visuals between scenes felt like glimpsing the future. The puzzles are pretty standard fare—talk to odd characters, combine random junk, hope it works—but the whole “space crook vs. intergalactic IRS” vibe gives it personality. Just don’t expect deep philosophical themes. It’s a game about a guy stealing stuff to avoid getting vaporized by accountants.
