Game Overview

It Came From the Desert (Beta) was a Sega Genesis release, developed by Cinemaware, that never saw a final commercial version. It arrived during a time when the Genesis was full of ambitious, often experimental titles trying to push the hardware with mixed results. This game was definitely one of those experiments, an adaptation of the studio's cinematic PC adventure that tried to translate a B-movie premise onto the 16-bit console.

You control a geologist trying to save a small desert town from an invasion of giant, mutated ants. The gameplay shifts between two distinct modes: a strategic map view where you deploy limited resources and personnel to contain the threat, and intense top-down action sequences where you directly control a jeep or soldier to exterminate the insects. The constant pressure of the spreading infestation and the sudden shifts from planning to frantic combat create a tense, unpredictable rhythm. It feels like a desperate struggle against an overwhelming force, where every small mistake can lead to the town's destruction.
