Game Overview

This SNES adaptation of The Lord of the Rings throws you right into Middle-earth with that classic 16-bit charm. You start as Frodo, sneaking through the Shire before things go south—Black Riders show up, and suddenly you're scrambling to Bree with the Ring. The pixel art does a surprisingly good job capturing Tolkien’s world, from the cozy hobbit holes to the eerie glow of the Nazgûl.

Combat’s a mix of real-time sword swings (if you’re Aragorn) and turn-based spells for Gandalf, which keeps things interesting. Though fair warning: the Balrog fight? Brutal. I remember grinding for potions just to survive Moria. The music’s all moody synths, perfect for those tense moments when orcs ambush you in the woods.

It’s not perfect—some translations from the book feel rushed, and the inventory system’s clunky—but there’s something special about seeing Tolkien’s story play out in SNES form. Just save often unless you enjoy replaying the Mines of Moria over and over.
