Play Jewels of Darkness Online
You type commands in pitch-black dungeons, fumbling with lantern light and praying you don’t starve or meet a grue while hunting treasure. The puzzles will wreck you—then suddenly click after you’ve stared at the screen forever.

Jewels of Darkness came out in 1986 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Level 9 Computing. It was a text adventure with graphics, which was a pretty common setup for that era, especially if you were playing on a PC without a lot of graphical horsepower. You got a mix of detailed descriptions and simple images to set the scene, which felt immersive at the time without being overly flashy.
You control an adventurer exploring dark, trap-filled locations like dungeons and castles, hunting for valuable jewels. The main goal is to find all the treasures while solving environmental puzzles and avoiding deadly creatures. You interact with the world by typing text commands, managing limited resources like a lantern with finite oil, and navigating screen by screen. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a high difficulty due to obscure puzzles and the constant threat of running out of light or dying unexpectedly. It feels tense and absorbing, like you're really piecing together a dangerous world one cautious command at a time.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
