Game Overview

JoJo's Venture, known in Japan as JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken, came out in arcades in 1998, developed and published by Capcom. It was part of that late 90s wave of fighting games, where developers were really pushing what 2D sprites could do, both in terms of animation and on-screen spectacle. This was a time when having a recognizable license, like Hirohiko Araki's manga, was a huge draw for pulling players to the cabinet.

You pick one of the series' heroes or villains, each with their unique Stand, a supernatural fighting spirit. The objective is to deplete your opponent's health bar within a round, or win two rounds first. Signature mechanics include calling your Stand out for attacks or defense, which can be kept on screen or recalled, and using a super meter for devastating special moves called Super Combos. The pacing is aggressive, with a lot of emphasis on closing distance and using your Stand's abilities to control space. Landing a complex combo that ends with a super move delivers a real sense of payoff.
