Play Jyangokushi -Haoh no Saihai- Online
Pick a warrior, wade into mobs of enemies, and try not to get swarmed—chunky sprites, meaty sword swings, and bosses that’ll wreck you until you learn their patterns. Classic arcade chaos with just enough strategy to keep you from button-mashing blindly.

Jyangokushi: Haoh no Saihai came out in arcades in 1991, developed and published by SNK. It was part of that wave of top-down action games that filled arcades in the late 80s and early 90s, sitting alongside titles like Gauntlet but with a distinct, historical Chinese setting. You don't hear about it as much as some of their other games, but it had a solid presence on the cabinet floor.
You control one of four playable generals, each with their own weapon and stats, and your goal is to fight through screen after screen of enemy soldiers to ultimately claim the imperial throne. The core loop involves clearing each area of all foes before you can proceed, using a combination of your main weapon and a limited, screen-clearing special attack. The pacing is deliberate; you can't just rush in, as enemies quickly surround you, and the difficulty encourages careful positioning over reckless aggression. It feels like managing a constant, chaotic battlefield from a commander's perspective, one mistake away from being overrun.
