King’s Quest IV flips the script—this time, you’re playing as Rosella, Graham’s daughter, on a desperate quest to save her dad. The setup’s dramatic: he collapses after tossing his adventurer’s hat (classic Graham), and the only cure is some magical fruit hidden in the weird, fairy-tale land of Tamir. Of course, nothing’s simple—you’ll also have to help a fairy reclaim her stolen talisman from a witch named Lolotte, who sounds about as friendly as you’d expect.

It’s the first King’s Quest with a female lead, and the world feels bigger and weirder than before. You’ll type commands to interact with everything—"open door," "give coin," that sort of thing—but the new engine means the game actually pauses while you’re typing, which is a lifesaver. No more frantic scrambling to type "pick up fish" before some monster wanders into view.

There’s a day-night cycle now, too, so some puzzles only work at certain times. Miss your window, and you’re stuck waiting around like an overgrown fairy-tale kid with nothing to do. The graphics are sharper than the earlier games, though the AGI version (if you end up with that one) looks rougher. Either way, it’s classic point-and-click adventure with all the charm—and frustration—that implies.

Just don’t expect Rosella to have an easy time of it. Tamir’s full of helpful weirdos and outright liars, and figuring out who’s who is half the fun.
