Kingdom Hearts Re-Coded came out on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Square Enix and h.a.n.d. It was part of that era where handhelds were packed with inventive, sometimes experimental titles, and this one definitely fit the bill. The game revisits the events of the first Kingdom Hearts but through a digital lens, framing everything as data inside Jiminy Cricket's journal.

You control a data version of Sora, moving through recreated Disney worlds to eliminate bugs and restore order. The gameplay shifts between several styles: you'll hack through Heartless in real-time combat, solve environmental puzzles in platforming sections, and even engage in turn-based command battles or first-person shooting sequences. Your main goal is to progress through each world, defeat bosses, and collect system chips to upgrade your stats and abilities. The pacing is brisk, with levels designed for short play sessions, though some boss fights demand quick reflexes. Despite the constant shifts in mechanics, it holds together surprisingly well and feels satisfying to master.
