Knockout Kings for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, published by EA Sports. It was one of the few boxing games on the handheld, arriving when sports titles were starting to find a solid, if simplified, place on portable systems. You control a boxer, moving him around the ring with the D-pad and throwing jabs, hooks, and uppercuts with the A and B buttons. The main goal is to climb the ranks through a career mode, winning matches to earn better equipment and tougher opponents. Signature mechanics include a stamina bar that depletes as you punch or block, forcing you to manage your energy, and a block button you must time carefully to avoid big hits. The pacing is deliberate; you can't just swing wildly or you'll gas out fast. It feels like a real test of patience and timing, landing a clean combo after waiting for an opening.
