I picked up The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning on the Nintendo DS back in 2006, a game developed by Krome Studios. It was part of that wave of handheld titles trying to capture a more serious, story driven adventure feel, a shift from the earlier Spyro games. The DS had a lot of experimental platformers then, and this one definitely leaned into its action elements.

You control Spyro directly, guiding him through linear levels to uncover his destiny and stop the Dark Master. The core gameplay involves a mix of platforming and combat, using the touch screen to execute different elemental breath attacks by swiping specific patterns. You explore areas screen by screen, battling groups of enemies and hunting for collectible gems to upgrade your abilities. The pacing is fairly brisk, and the combat can get surprisingly involved for a portable title. It feels responsive and punchy when you get into a good rhythm of attacks.
