Liquid Kids came out in 1990 as an arcade game from Taito. It was part of that era where platformers were everywhere, but this one had a different kind of charm. You weren't a space marine or a ninja; you were a cartoon hippo on a mission to save your kidnapped friends.
You control Hipopo, a surprisingly nimble hippo who throws water balloons. The main goal is to clear each screen of enemies by hitting them with your throws. When you soak an enemy, they freeze into a block of ice. You can then kick that block; it slides across platforms, shattering other foes or breaking through weak floors. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty ramps up steadily as you navigate multi-tiered stages, often having to use frozen enemies as stepping stones or weapons. It feels chaotic and clever, a mix of precision aiming and improvisation as you try to clean up each area before anything thaws out and comes back for more.
