Lode Runner 3-D came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by Big Bang. It was part of that wave of classic games trying to make the jump into 3D, and it definitely had its own take on things. The series was already known for its puzzle platforming, but this entry brought it into a new dimension, for better or worse.
You control a runner who must collect all the gold in each stage while avoiding enemy monks. The main mechanics involve digging holes to trap enemies or create paths; you can also climb ladders and grab onto horizontal bars. The levels are designed screen by screen, with a mix of exploration and careful timing. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes clumsy, translation of a 2D classic into the 3D space.
