Lode Runner 3-D on the N64 takes the old-school digging and dodging formula and throws it into a blocky, early 3D world. At first, the shift from 2D feels a little awkward—your guy moves like he’s sliding on ice—but once you get used to it, there’s something satisfying about blasting holes in the floor to trap those creepy little monk enemies chasing you.
The levels get devious fast. One minute you’re casually grabbing gold bricks, the next you’re frantically digging escape routes while three monks corner you from different angles. The camera’s a bit of a pain sometimes, but the puzzles are clever enough that you’ll forget about it when you finally crack a tough stage. If you liked the original’s mix of strategy and chaos, this one’s a weird but fun twist on the formula.
Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—those later levels will make you sweat.
