Madden NFL 09 for the Nintendo DS came out in 2008, developed by EA Tiburon. You control the entire football team, calling plays from a simplified playbook and executing them with a mix of button presses and stylus swipes. The main objective is to win games by outscoring your opponent, moving down the field through a combination of running and passing plays. Signature mechanics include drawing receiver routes directly on the touch screen before the snap and using flick gestures to throw passes or juke defenders. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially on defense where AI coverage sometimes breaks down. It feels like a genuine, if slightly janky, attempt to put a full Madden game in your hands.
