Magical Drop 2 came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, published by Data East. It was a late release for the system, arriving when many players were already looking ahead to newer consoles, but it offered a distinct kind of puzzle action that felt right at home on the SNES.
You control a character at the bottom of the screen who grabs colored orbs from a descending stack and shoots them back up. The goal is to clear your own screen by making matches of three or more same-colored orbs, which then sends a cascade of garbage orbs over to your opponent. The core mechanics involve quick grabbing, strategic aiming, and creating chain reactions to overwhelm the other player or the AI. The pacing is relentlessly fast, and the difficulty ramps up sharply, especially in the single player story mode against the game's tarot card themed bosses. It feels like a high speed, tactical tug of war where one mistake can bury you.
