Play Magmax Online
Scavenge mech parts to rebuild Magmax—a janky but addictive NES shooter where losing upgrades hurts more than dying.

Magmax came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, published by Nihon Bussan. It was one of those many side-scrolling shooters that filled the NES library, a time when developers were still figuring out what worked on the console. The game doesn't have the polish of later releases, but it has a certain rough charm that makes it memorable.
You control a transforming robot, starting on foot and then assembling a larger mech from parts you collect. The main goal is to simply survive and push forward, screen by screen, blasting a variety of alien creatures and geometric obstacles. Your power comes from collecting three specific parts (the head, body, and legs) to form the complete Magmax, which gives you stronger firepower and more health. The catch is that if you get hit, you lose your most recently collected part, a punishment that often feels worse than losing a life. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty spikes quickly, demanding sharp reflexes. It feels like a constant struggle to hold onto your hard-earned upgrades long enough to make any real progress.
