Game Overview

Makai-Mura, known as Ghosts 'n Goblins in the West, came out on the NES in 1986 from Capcom. It was one of those games that defined the platform's early years, sitting right alongside other tough, straightforward action titles that didn't hold your hand. You either got good or you got frustrated; there wasn't much in between.

You control a knight named Arthur who has to rescue a princess from a demon king. You move screen by screen through a side-scrolling world, throwing lances or knives at zombies, demons, and other monsters. The main objective is to get through each level, defeat the boss, and move on, but the real challenge is the limited weapon selection, the fact that enemies respawn if you backtrack, and how just two hits strip your armor and leave you in your underwear. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is famously high, demanding precise jumps and attacks. Finishing a level gives a real sense of accomplishment, but the game is known for throwing you right back to the start after the final boss, demanding a second playthrough to see the true ending. It feels punishing but fair in a way that makes every small victory matter.
