Game Overview

Max and Sparky came out in 1997 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a bundle of simple titles from that era. I'm not sure who originally developed it, but it fits right in with the kind of shareware platformers you'd find on floppy disks back then. It doesn't try to be groundbreaking; it's just a straightforward, slightly odd little game from the tail end of the DOS years.

You control Max, a boy, and his robotic dog Sparky, navigating through a series of side scrolling levels. Your goal is to guide both characters to the exit in each stage, which often requires careful coordination since they move together. Signature mechanics include switching control between Max and Sparky to use their unique abilities, like Sparky's higher jumps or Max's interactions with objects, and collecting batteries to keep Sparky powered up. The pacing is methodical, with some tricky jumps and timing puzzles that can trip you up. It feels charmingly clunky and earnest, like a forgotten cartoon from a Saturday morning you barely remember.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
