Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops came out for the PlayStation Portable in 2006, developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. It was one of the more ambitious stealth titles on the PSP, bringing a full Metal Gear experience to a handheld at a time when that was still a novelty. The game built on what made the series compelling, but it felt built for shorter, on the go sessions.

You play as Big Boss, leading a small team after a prison break. Your main goal is to build a private army by recruiting enemy soldiers; you do this by sneaking through guarded areas, subduing guards non lethally, then dragging or carrying them to a nearby truck. The game uses a grid like mission structure, moving screen by screen through enemy installations. Managing your recruited soldiers, assigning them to combat or support roles, becomes a key part of the strategy. The pacing is deliberate, with careful observation and timing often more effective than rushing in. It feels like a thoughtful, tactical extension of the series, even with the hardware limitations.
