Play Metal Slug 2001 Online
Blasting through waves of enemies with overpowered tanks and ridiculous weapons—somehow they squeezed all the chaotic fun of Metal Slug into this tiny cartridge. The shotgun kicks like a mule, and those little pixelated soldiers still flail when you nail them.

Metal Slug 2001 was released for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by SNK and published by Mega Enterprise. It arrived late in the handheld's life, a time when developers were pushing the hardware to its limits with ambitious ports of arcade classics. This version tried to capture the frantic, detailed action of the Neo Geo originals on much more constrained hardware.
You control a soldier fighting through enemy forces across several side-scrolling stages. Your main goal is to survive each level, rescuing POWs for extra firepower and seizing vehicles like the iconic SV-001 tank when available. Signature mechanics include swapping between multiple weapon pickups (shotgun, heavy machine gun, rocket launcher) and using grenades to clear clustered foes. The pacing is fast, with constant enemy spawns and screen-filling bosses; the difficulty stays high, demanding quick reflexes and smart weapon management. It feels like a condensed, slightly janky but earnest interpretation of the series' explosive spirit.
