Midwinter II: Flames of Freedom is one of those ambitious Amiga games that tries to do everything at once—open-world strategy, real-time combat, and even a bit of survival. You start off leading a resistance movement on this frozen island, and the first thing that hits you is how massive the map feels. You’re not just running around shooting things; you’re recruiting allies, scavenging supplies, and trying not to freeze to death.
The controls take some getting used to—switching between vehicles, skis, and on-foot combat can be clunky at first. But once it clicks, there’s something weirdly satisfying about ambushing enemy patrols in the middle of a snowstorm. The graphics are rough by today’s standards, but the atmosphere is thick with that late '80s, early '90s PC gaming charm.
