Play Midwinter II: Flames of Freedom Online
You roam a frozen island recruiting rebels, stealing tanks, and causing chaos—every playthrough feels different because the game never tells you no.

Midwinter II: Flames of Freedom came out in 1991 for MS-DOS, developed by Maelstrom Games. It was part of that wave of ambitious PC titles that tried to do things a little differently, with a big open world and a focus on freedom rather than just following a set path. It didn't have the flashiest graphics, even for the time, but it made up for that with its sheer scope.
You control a resistance leader on the snowy island of Midwinter, and your goal is to overthrow a military occupation. The game is played from a first-person perspective, and you explore the island screen by screen, recruiting allies, sabotaging enemy operations, and commandeering vehicles like snowmobiles and even tanks. The pacing is deliberate; you spend a lot of time traversing the harsh landscape, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited resources and the constant threat of patrols. It feels like a desperate, personal struggle against overwhelming odds, where every small victory matters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
