Mines of Minos is one of those Atari 2600 games that starts simple and then suddenly has you sweating over joystick inputs. You play as the last mining robot left in a monster-infested mine, which—let’s be honest—is a pretty rough first day on the job. Your goal? Scrounge up spare parts to build backup robots (extra lives) while dodging or bombing the creatures that keep respawning. The bombs are tricky—they only explode after a few seconds, so timing is everything, and you can only have one active at a time.

The maze layout forces you to think fast: deposit parts at the top or bottom center, zip through side tunnels to escape, or hold the button while moving through them to switch levels. The real challenge kicks in at level five, where you have to kamikaze into three stationary monsters. Yeah, you’ll die doing it, so those spare bots better be ready.

Two-player mode flips the script—Player 2 controls a monster, switching between them to keep the robot guessing. And with all the variations (flooded mines, invisible layouts, different part requirements), there’s a surprising amount of strategy buried in this old-school gem. Just don’t blame me when you get too confident and lose your last robot to a poorly timed bomb.
