Game Overview

Sunsoft released Minna no Soft Series: Shanghai for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, a time when the handheld was full of quick, pick-up-and-play titles. It was part of a broader series of accessible games, and this one focused purely on bringing the classic tile-matching puzzle to a portable screen.

You control a cursor to select and remove matching pairs of mahjong tiles from a multi-layered layout. The main objective is to clear the entire board by matching open tiles, but the challenge comes from tiles being stacked; only those not covered on top or blocked on the sides are free to use. The game requires careful planning to avoid trapping key pieces, and the pace is methodical, almost meditative, once you fall into its rhythm. It feels like quietly untangling a very satisfying, self-imposed knot.
