Game Overview

Shanghai 2: Dragon's Eye came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, published by Activision. It was one of those quiet puzzle games that felt right at home on the system, a follow-up to the original tile-matching game that offered a more atmospheric, almost meditative alternative to the platformers and shooters dominating the era.

You control a cursor to match and remove pairs of identical mahjong tiles from layered, sometimes three-dimensional boards. The goal is to clear every tile from each screen, but the layouts quickly become intricate, with tiles stacked on top of one another and only certain pairs accessible at a time. The game introduces special dragon tiles that must be matched last, and some stages feature moving or rotating boards that force you to plan several moves ahead. It starts calmly but the difficulty ramps up steadily, demanding real spatial awareness and patience. Playing it feels like slowly untangling a very beautiful, very stubborn knot.
