Double Dragon 3 came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Technos Japan. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling beat 'em ups that filled arcades and living rooms back then, though this one had a reputation for being especially unforgiving. You could tell they were trying to expand the formula, adding more characters and branching paths, but it still felt very much like a product of its time, rough edges and all.

You control either Billy or Jimmy Lee, punching and kicking your way through screen after screen of enemies. The main goal is to rescue Marian from a cult, which means fighting across multiple countries, from the U.S. to Egypt and China. New mechanics include being able to switch between different fighters you unlock, like the nunchaku-wielding Chin or the boomerang-throwing Sonny, and using in-game currency to buy weapons or extra lives at shops between stages. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep; enemies hit hard, and cheap shots are common. It feels like a grind, demanding patience and repetition more than finesse.
