Game Overview

Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones came out for the NES in 1991, published by Tradewest. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling beat 'em ups that filled rental shelves in the early '90s, a time when co-op brawlers were a staple of weekend gaming sessions. You and a friend could jump right in, though the game had a reputation for being tougher and a bit different from its predecessors.

You control either Billy or Jimmy Lee, martial artists fighting through waves of enemies across different countries. The main goal is to recover a series of sacred stones by defeating stage bosses. You move screen by screen, punching, kicking, and using weapons like knives and nunchucks that drop from foes. A unique mechanic lets you spend collected coins to unlock additional playable characters, each with their own moves, which adds some strategy. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving, with aggressive enemies and limited continues. Playing it feels like a grueling, sometimes unfair, but persistent climb through one chaotic fight after another.
