Game Overview

Battletoads & Double Dragon came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Rare and published by Tradewest. It was a crossover that felt right at home on the system, joining two very different beat 'em up franchises into one chaotic package. At the time, it was just another solid entry in a genre packed with competitors, but it had a certain weird charm that set it apart.

You control one of three Battletoads or Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon, fighting through screen after screen of enemies on a mission to stop the Dark Queen. The game uses a side-scrolling beat 'em up format with occasional vehicle stages, and your characters have exaggerated, over-the-top attacks like turning their fists into giant hammers or stretching their legs across the screen. The pacing is fast and the difficulty spikes hard in later levels, demanding precise timing and a lot of patience. Landing a ridiculous combo and watching enemies fly offscreen makes all the frustration worth it.
