Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team came out on the NES in 1993, developed by Rare and published by Tradewest. It was a late release for the system, a time when developers were pushing the hardware with more ambitious ideas and collaborations. This game brought together two very different franchises, the Battletoads and the Double Dragons, in a single side-scrolling adventure.

You control one of five characters, either solo or with a friend, fighting through screen after screen of the Dark Queen's forces. The main goal is to stop her from taking over the galaxy with a new super weapon. You punch, kick, and use special moves that often involve your limbs transforming into absurd weapons, like giant fists or even a ram's head. The pacing is relentless, with enemy waves, occasional vehicle stages, and some notoriously difficult platforming sections. It feels like a frantic, sometimes unfair, but always energetic scramble to the next checkpoint.
