Battletoads and Double Dragon came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, a crossover developed by Rare that brought two very different beat 'em up franchises together. It was a time when the console was full of side-scrolling brawlers, and this one stood out simply because of its bizarre premise and the sheer audacity of its visual style.
You pick one of the three Battletoads or one of the two Double Dragons, then fight screen by screen through waves of the Dark Queen's alien soldiers. Your main goal is to stop her from taking over the solar system, which involves a lot of punching, kicking, and using exaggerated, morphing limb attacks that turn your fists into giant hammers or your feet into oversized boots. The pacing is frantic, often brutally difficult, especially during the infamous turbo tunnel sections that demand perfect timing. It feels like a chaotic, slightly unhinged cartoon where every punch has a comical weight to it.
