I picked up The Mummy Returns for Game Boy Color back in 2001, a tie-in with the movie released around the same time. Developed by Pocket Studios and published by Universal Interactive, it was one of those licensed games that tried to capture the adventure feel on a handheld. The Game Boy Color was full of these kinds of action platformers, and this one fit right in with its mix of exploration and combat.

You control either Rick O'Connell or the Scorpion King, each with their own moves; Rick uses a rifle for melee attacks and can pick up temporary weapons like pistols, while the Scorpion King summons scarabs and throws fireballs. The goal is to navigate through pyramid chambers and desert ruins, defeating undead enemies and avoiding traps. You explore screen by screen, backtracking at times to use new abilities or items you've found. The pacing is fairly quick, though some sections can be tricky with instant death pits and respawning foes. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes challenging run through a condensed version of the film's setting.
