Play NARC Online
In NARC, you shoot your way through drug operations, take down quirky enemies, collect evidence, and manage limited ammo in a gritty side-scrolling adventure on the NES.
I first played NARC on the NES back in 1990, a port of the Williams Electronics arcade game. It stood out on the console for its gritty, contemporary setting at a time when fantasy and sci-fi dominated the shelves. The game had a certain notoriety, a product of its era's aggressive anti-drug messaging wrapped in a loud, pulpy package.
You control one or two members of the Narcotics Division, moving through side-scrolling and occasionally top-down stages to bust up drug operations. Your main goal is to shoot your way through waves of dealers and bizarre enemies, like mohawked punks and guys in chicken suits, while collecting evidence bags and keycards to progress. The signature mechanics involve switching between a standard pistol and a rocket launcher for crowd control, plus the constant need to manage your limited ammunition. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty spikes sharply, demanding quick reflexes and careful resource management. It feels like a chaotic, slightly unhinged trip through a cartoon version of a bad action movie.
