Electronic Arts released NASCAR 2000 for the Game Boy Color in 1999, a time when handheld racing games were often simple and scaled down. This one tried to capture the feel of stock car racing on a small screen, joining a number of other sports titles that pushed the limits of the hardware.
You control a single NASCAR vehicle, aiming to win races across a selection of real world tracks. The game uses a top down perspective, and you spend most of your time managing your position in the pack, looking for opportunities to slingshot past opponents using the draft. Rubbing against other cars is a constant risk, as contact can slow you down or spin you out. The races are fairly short, but the competition is tight, requiring focus to avoid mistakes. It feels surprisingly tense for such a small game.
