I picked up NASCAR Heat for the Game Boy Color back in 2000, a release from Infogrames. It was one of those pocket racers that tried to bring a bit of the big track feel to the small screen, a common goal for sports games on the handheld at the time. It didn't try to be the most realistic sim, but it was there if you wanted to race.
You control a single stock car, aiming to win races across a few different circuits. The main mechanics involve drafting behind other cars to gain a speed boost and managing your car's wear, like tire condition and engine heat, which you can adjust in the pits. The racing is fast, and the pack can get tight, making it easy to spin out if you're not careful. It feels like a simplified but genuine effort to capture the constant adjustments and close quarters of a real NASCAR race.
