Need for Speed: Undercover on the DS is one of those racers that actually makes handheld cops-and-robbers chases feel intense. You start off with some clunky sedan, but after a few street races (and a couple of close calls with police roadblocks), you’re already eyeing upgrades or saving up for something faster. The city’s got this grimy, neon-lit vibe that works surprisingly well on the small screen.
What I didn’t expect was how much the undercover missions mix things up—one minute you’re tailing a suspect without getting spotted, the next you’re weaving through traffic to shake off a chopper. The cop AI isn’t perfect, but they’ll box you in if you’re not careful. Customization’s decent for a DS game too—nothing crazy, but swapping out rims or tweaking your ride’s handling helps when you’re stuck on a tricky pursuit mission.
It’s not the prettiest NFS game out there, but for handheld chaos, it gets the job done.
