Play NHL '96 (Europe) Online

Skating feels smooth, checks land with a satisfying crunch, and one-timers actually work—this is hockey the way it should be. The pixelated arenas and that cheesy organ music just seal the deal.

Game Overview

NHL '96 on SNES was my go-to hockey fix back in the day, and honestly, it still holds up. The first thing you notice is how much smoother everything feels compared to earlier NHL games—players glide across the ice without that weird choppiness, and checking someone into the boards has just the right amount of weight behind it.

One-timers actually work now, which changes everything when you’re setting up plays. The AI isn’t brain-dead either—defenders will actually try to block shots instead of just standing there. And yeah, the graphics are still pixelated, but in that perfect mid-90s way where every jersey and arena has its own personality. That organ music between plays? Pure nostalgia.

It’s not fancy by today’s standards, but there’s something about the simplicity that makes it so easy to pick up and play. Grab a friend, pick your favorite team (or the one with the fastest wingers), and you’ll be trash-talking each other within minutes. Still one of the best hockey games on the system.
