Play NHL Blades of Steel Online
You’ll lose track of the score in this fast, messy hockey game—until you suddenly drop the gloves and start throwing pixelated punches. The fights are stupidly satisfying, and scoring feels like pure luck half the time.

Game Overview
NHL Blades of Steel on Game Boy Color is exactly what you'd hope for—fast, chaotic hockey with the added bonus of fist fights breaking out mid-game. After two years without a decent hockey title on the handheld, this one feels like a breath of fresh (if slightly violent) air.
The gameplay is pure arcade madness—you’ll score a lot, get scored on a lot, and occasionally drop the gloves to punch some poor sap in a pixelated brawl. The fights switch to a side-view mini-game where you trade haymakers, which is honestly more fun than it has any right to be.
It’s got all the NHL teams and players, plus a create-a-player mode (rare for Game Boy at the time). The season and playoff modes give you something to grind through, but honestly, I spent way too much time in the practice arena just taking penalty shots and starting fights for no reason.
Graphics are decent, though the colors could’ve been more vibrant. Still, the animations for goals and fights are a nice touch. Just don’t expect simulation-level realism—this is all about high scores and throwing hands. If you’ve got a link cable, two-player is an absolute riot.
It’s not perfect, but for portable hockey with attitude, this one’s hard to beat.
