Konami released NHL Blades of Steel for the Game Boy Color in 1999, a handheld version of the arcade hockey series. It arrived during a time when portable sports games were often simplified, but this one tried to pack in some of the action from its console cousins. The small screen and limited hardware meant compromises, but it was a solid attempt to bring fast hockey on the go.
You control a team of five players, skating up and down the ice, passing and shooting to score goals. The main objective is to outscore the opponent within three periods. Signature mechanics include one-on-one fights that break out after certain checks; winning these gives your team a temporary advantage. You also execute special moves, like dekes and slap shots, with simple button combinations. The pacing is quick, almost frantic, and the difficulty can spike sharply against later teams. It feels chaotic and unpredictable, a game where a lucky bounce or a well-timed punch can turn everything around.
