NHL Stanley Cup came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of the hockey titles that tried to capture the fast pace of the sport on a console known for its colorful, sprite-based action games.
You control a team of five skaters and a goalie, working to outscore your opponent in a series of playoff games to win the cup. The game uses Mode 7 scaling to create a pseudo-3D effect on the ice, making the rink appear to pivot as you move. Signature mechanics include body-checking opponents to separate them from the puck and executing one-timer shots for quick scoring chances. The pacing is frantic, and the computer can be punishing on higher difficulty settings. It feels like a satisfying, if sometimes clumsy, arcade interpretation of hockey.
