Omega Fighter came out in 1989 as an arcade release from UPL, a developer known for a few other shooters around that time. It arrived during a period when vertical shooters were common, but it had a couple of ideas that made it stand out without reinventing the wheel.
You pilot a small ship through waves of enemy crafts and larger bosses, clearing the screen before moving upward. The main objective is survival, but scoring is built around risk; you earn huge bonuses by flying dangerously close to enemies before destroying them. Your ship has two distinct weapon types, a standard forward shot and a trickier, arcing shot that requires good positioning to use effectively. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is steep, especially when bullets fill the screen later on. It feels tense and deliberate, demanding both quick reflexes and a little bravery.
