Operation C came out for the Game Boy in 1991, developed and published by Konami. It was one of the more substantial action games on the system at the time, offering a complete Contra experience in a portable format without feeling like a weak imitation of its console siblings.

You control a lone soldier running and jumping through side-scrolling and occasional top-down stages, shooting everything that moves. Your main goal is simply to survive to the end of each level, fighting screen-filling bosses that demand quick reflexes. The game lets you collect power-ups to switch between a default rifle, a rapid-fire laser, and the iconic Spread Gun that fires in five directions. It moves at a relentless pace, and the difficulty is punishing but fair; you memorize enemy patterns or you die.
