Orb 3D came out for the NES in 1990 from Hi-Tech Expressions. It was part of that wave of games trying to do something a little different with the hardware, often by leaning into a gimmick. This one used 3D glasses, which were included in the box, to give its wireframe graphics some depth.
You control a small, spherical ship called the Orb, navigating it through a series of single-screen maze chambers. Your goal is to destroy a central crystal in each room while avoiding walls and enemy drones. The main mechanics involve carefully managing your limited fuel supply and using a force field that can repel enemy fire but also drains your energy. The pacing is slow and deliberate, demanding precision over speed as you plot a safe course through the angular, minimalist levels. It feels like solving a spatial puzzle under constant, quiet pressure.
