Orcs & Elves came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by id Software and published by Electronic Arts. It was a time when the handheld was full of inventive takes on classic genres, and this one felt like a deliberate throwback to grid-based dungeon crawlers, but with a modern polish that made it stand out.
You control a young elf named Elli, armed with a talking wand named Ellon, and your goal is to rescue your father and stop an army of orcs from overrunning a mountain stronghold. Movement is screen by screen, turn based; you explore the dungeon, fight monsters in tactical, timing-based combat with a sword or bow, and solve environmental puzzles. The pacing is deliberate, the difficulty steady, and it feels like a thoughtful, almost meditative crawl through a beautifully drawn underworld.
