Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed and published by Konami. It was part of a wave of games that took familiar formulas and twisted them into something playful and surreal, a contrast to the more serious shooters and platformers of the time.
You pilot a selection of odd ships, like a penguin or a spaceship shaped like the Vic Viper from Gradius but with a silly face. Your goal is to fly from left to right, clearing each stage by defeating waves of enemies and massive, ridiculous bosses. You collect bells to power up your ship, choosing between different weapon types like lasers, spread shots, or homing missiles. The pacing is fast and chaotic, with a difficulty that can spike unexpectedly. It feels like being inside a cartoon where the rules are made up and nothing is predictable.
