Phantasy Star 0 came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed and published by Sega. It was part of that era where handhelds were really pushing what they could do with online multiplayer and action RPGs, and this one made good use of the hardware. It felt ambitious for a DS title, especially with its fully 3D environments and the option to play with others over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

You create a custom character from one of three races and several classes, then set out to explore a world fractured by an ancient conflict. The main goal involves investigating a mysterious calamity, which leads you through screen by screen exploration across varied planets, battling monsters in real time combat using swords, guns, or techniques. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen for quick access to items and special attacks, as well as a partner machinery system where you raise an AI companion to fight alongside you. The pacing is brisk, but the difficulty can spike sharply in later dungeons if you haven't grinded or prepared properly. It feels like a condensed, portable version of a much larger adventure, with a surprising amount of customization and loot to discover.
