You pick your fighter, then bounce between neon cities and alien ruins—swinging swords, tapping skills on the touchscreen, and getting wrecked by late-game bosses if you rush in. That DS cartridge holds way more story and loot than it should.
Phantasy Star 0 on the DS is one of those RPGs that feels bigger than it has any right to be. You start off customizing your character—I went with a human hunter because swords never get old—and before long, you're jumping between futuristic cities and weird alien planets. The combat's snappy for a turn-based system, and the touchscreen actually gets used for quick skill shortcuts, which is nice.
What surprised me was how much story they packed in here. There’s this whole mystery about ancient civilizations and rogue AI, and the dialogue doesn’t feel like an afterthought. The Wi-Fi multiplayer was the big draw back in the day (RIP), but even solo, the loot grind and boss fights hold up. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—some of those later dungeons will wreck you if you’re underleveled.
Still one of the better portable Phantasy Star experiences, even if the sprites are tiny.
