Play Pirates of Dark Water, The (USA, Europe) (May 1994) Online
Swing your sword across pirate ships, dodge instant-death black goo, and time your blocks just right—this Genesis gem nails that cartoon’s chaotic energy.

Ahoy! The Pirates of Dark Water on Genesis is one of those weirdly charming licensed games that actually holds up. You play as Ren, swinging swords, hopping between ships, and dodging this creepy black goo called Dark Water that instantly kills you—no second chances. The animation’s surprisingly smooth for a Genesis title, and the levels feel like they’re ripped straight from the cartoon, complete with rope swings and pirate ship battles.
What I love is how it mixes things up—one minute you’re platforming across sinking ruins, the next you’re in a sword fight where timing your blocks actually matters. Bloth’s crew shows up to hassle you, and some of the traps are just mean (in a fun way). If you remember the show, it’s a nostalgia bomb, but even if you don’t, it’s got that classic Sega energy—tough but fair, with a ton of personality. Just don’t get too attached to your health bar.
