Play Pirates of Dark Water, The (Beta) Online
Swing Ren’s sword through glitchy pirate ruins, dodging spike traps and weird jellyfish—it’s rough but has that unfinished beta charm. The Dark Water creeping in the background looks just like the cartoon.

Ahoy! Pirates of the Dark Water on SNES is one of those weird, unfinished beta games that somehow feels more interesting because of it. You play as Ren, swinging a sword through side-scrolling levels that mix combat with little environmental puzzles—like figuring out how to lower a bridge or avoid spike traps. The animation’s surprisingly smooth for a beta, and the art nails that grimy pirate aesthetic from the cartoon.
It’s janky in places (enemies sometimes get stuck, and the jumping feels a bit stiff), but there’s something charming about exploring a game that never got polished. Fans of the show will spot little details, like the way Dark Water oozes in the background. Not gonna lie, I died a lot to those floating jellyfish monsters before getting the timing down.
If you’re into obscure retro stuff or just want to see what a pirate-themed Zelda-like might’ve been, this is a cool artifact to mess around with.
