Pirates of Dark Water on the SNES came out in 1994, developed by Sunsoft. It was one of those licensed games from the era that tried to capture a Saturday morning cartoon feel, though it never quite reached the popularity of some other titles on the system.

You control Ren, the main character, moving screen by screen through side scrolling levels, fighting enemies with your sword and occasionally using a crossbow. The goal is to collect the Thirteen Treasures of Rule to save the world from the Dark Water. You explore different environments, like ruins and ships, dealing with platforming sections and enemy encounters. The pacing can feel a bit slow, and the difficulty is uneven in places, with some frustrating enemy patterns. Playing it feels like navigating an ambitious but unpolished world, where every small victory comes with a dose of old school challenge.
