Pirates of Dark Water came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of licensed games based on animated shows, and it tried to capture the look and adventure of the source material. You don't see it mentioned too often these days, but it had a certain style that made it stand out from other action platformers at the time.
You control Ren, the young hero, navigating through side scrolling levels filled with enemies and environmental puzzles. The main goal is to collect the thirteen lost treasures of Rule to stop the spread of the evil Dark Water. You use a sword for close combat and can find a crossbow for ranged attacks, switching between them as needed. The levels are designed screen by screen, requiring you to defeat all enemies in an area before moving on, which can slow the pace. It's known for being quite difficult, with precise jumps and aggressive enemies. Playing it feels like a constant push through a vibrant but demanding world.
