Pirates of Dark Water came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of licensed games based on animated series, and it fit right in with the platform's action adventure offerings at the time. The game tried to capture the look and feel of the show, with colorful sprites and detailed backgrounds that stood out among other SNES titles.
You control Ren, the young hero, navigating through side scrolling levels and occasional top down areas. Your main goal is to collect the Thirteen Treasures of Rule to save the world from the spreading Dark Water. You use a sword for close combat, a crossbow for ranged attacks, and you do a lot of jumping between platforms and climbing ropes. The game moves at a brisk pace, but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially with enemies swarming and environmental hazards like rising water or collapsing structures. It feels frantic and demanding, pushing you to stay alert through each screen.
