Platoon on the NES doesn’t mess around—you’re dumped into the jungle with nothing but a rifle and a prayer. One minute you’re side-scrolling through dense foliage, picking off enemies, and the next you’re in first-person mode, sweating bullets as you line up shots in a tense ambush. No health pickups, no respawns—just you and the creeping dread that someone’s about to flank you.
It’s janky in that classic NES way, but there’s something weirdly immersive about how quiet it gets between firefights. The music’s barely there, just a few eerie notes that make the jungle feel even more lonely. And yeah, it’s brutally hard—expect to die a lot before you figure out where the enemies spawn or how to navigate minefields without blowing yourself up.
Not many games back then tried switching perspectives mid-mission, and Platoon pulls it off… mostly. If you’ve got the patience for old-school trial-and-error, it’s a fascinating relic. Just don’t throw your controller when the VC snipes you for the tenth time.
