Play Platoon (Rev A) Online
Navigate the jungles of Vietnam, switch perspectives, survive missions, find items, and manage your ammo while battling enemy soldiers in this 8-bit action game.
Platoon (Rev A) came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by Ocean Software. It was part of that wave of games trying to translate serious, often movie-based, subject matter into the limited but expressive world of 8-bit action. You don't get many straightforward Vietnam War games on the NES, and this one stood out for its attempt at a grim, methodical tone.
You control a lone soldier navigating the jungles of Vietnam, switching between an overhead view for exploration and a first-person perspective for combat encounters. Your main objective is to survive a series of missions, which often involve finding specific items or clearing areas of enemy soldiers. The signature mechanics are this constant perspective shift and the need to carefully manage your limited ammunition and grenade supply across both views. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a high difficulty that punishes rushed movement; it feels less like an arcade shooter and more like a tense, vulnerable simulation of survival. Every cleared screen brings a small wave of relief before the tension builds again.
