Platoon on the NES came out in 1986, developed by Ocean Software. It was one of many licensed games from that era, based on the Oliver Stone film, and it tried to bring a more serious tone to the console's action library. You don't see many Vietnam War games on the NES, so it always stood out, even if it wasn't always smooth.
You control a soldier navigating jungle terrain, clearing areas of enemy fighters. The main goal is to complete missions by finding items and eliminating all opposition on each screen. The game uses a screen by screen exploration structure, switching between overhead movement and first person perspective segments for shooting. It's known for being quite difficult, with limited continues and enemies that respawn quickly. Playing it feels tense and methodical, like a careful push through hostile territory.
