Pokémon Aqua is one of those rare hacks that actually makes Kanto feel new again—without losing what made the original so special. Right from the start, you’ll notice little tweaks: the towns have this coastal vibe, some routes are partially flooded, and even the wild encounters lean heavy on water types (good luck avoiding Tentacool).
I went in expecting a simple palette swap, but there’s way more here. The gym leaders actually use themed teams now—Brock’s got a sneaky Kabuto, and Misty? Let’s just say her Starmie hits harder than you remember. The new islands scattered around the map are the real highlight though. One minute you’re surfing past familiar docks, the next you’re diving into caves that definitely weren’t in the original.
It’s still Pokémon Red at heart, just... damper. If you’ve ever thought "I wish this game had more reasons to use Surf," congrats, your wish came true. Just watch out for the buffed rival battles—that Squirtle’s got teeth now.
